Uber and Global Shout Collaboration

Over the course of the past three years assisting new Afghan refugee arrivals, our team at Global Shout have provided help in the form of social services, urgent health care, English language classes, job training and guidance, home furnishing and food/clothing assistance, and asylum and legal aide. But we have often encountered difficulties with providing these services and empowering our new friends to achieve autonomy and self-sufficiency, not because the resources are not available, but because they cannot reach them consistently enough. Many refugees do not have vehicles or access to public transportation, for reasons including language barrier, lack of financial support, large family sizes and limited child care, and so on. When they lack the ability to obtain licenses and vehicles, our team members have often personally provided them rides or paid for Ubers to get them to their destinations.

     We are excited to announce that the team at Uber have agreed to collaborate with Global Shout to fund rides for refugee families in Northern Virginia, Washington D.C., and Maryland for the next year until they get on their feet. This is an exciting step in our efforts to help our newly arrived friends achieve their goals of a better life. By not having to worry about transportation, they will now be able to attend English classes regularly, pursue their routine meetings with lawyers to establish legal asylum in the United States, visit local government social services offices to obtain aide for them and their families, and take their young and old to their routine health appointments to get the care they need. We hope this partnership will help families grow and adjust quicker to their new lives, so that they can flourish and not worry about essential needs any longer.
